Dresser Scarf and Quilt

DRESSER SCARF

I saw this lovely pre-printed dresser scarf at the thrift store and just couldn't pass it up.  I have really enjoyed following Yesterday Embroidery and Stamped Linen Embroidery's wonderful needlework.  You lovely ladies have inspired me to return to my first love, embroidery.

I choose variegated purple for the lady dress, umbrella and bonnet.  I used 2 different color browns, light and dark, for the fence and a lovely scattering of colorful flowers.  This was a fun project and will look well on the wash stand in the spare bedroom.

Now I need help.  How do I finish the edges?  Do I cut along the perforated opening?  Someone help me!

QUILT

My husband wanted a lap quilt that was long enough to cover his feet when he is napping in the recliner but not too wide.  I had a mixed batch of small squares and I added 4 large blue one to break it up.

I used a diagonal pattern and worked around the large blue squares.  I had to pay attention to make sure that I keep the pattern going, but I obviously wasn't on point all the time.  In the upper right hand corner I mixed up the brown and off white square.  I was told once that quilters always make a small purposeful mistake in their work.   Has anyone heard of that?  Well it seems, I have done that several times, but not on purpose!

For backing material I bought the same brown check that matched a few of the squares.  I hand quilted using some parts of templates that I made years ago for another quilt.

Hope you're enjoying the summer,
Cinder

  1. Your embroidery work is beautiful! Hope you do more! I'm wondering if the perforations are for working a crocheted edging? Kathleen will probably know for sure.

  2. I'm sure all my quilts have a mistake or 2 in them, but I don't make them on purpose either. I like that idea though. Your husband will love the "just the right sized" lap quilt. What a pretty dresser scarf. I have no idea what you should do with the perforated edge of the dresser scarf!

  3. Oh I was so happy to read your post today. Lets start with the embroidery! I love the runner that you have stitched. What wonderful work and the colors you chose are perfect. Don't cut on the perforated openings. Some people use that to put on a hand crocheted border. I guess if you aren't going to do the crochet than you can use that as your cut line. It will look wonderful in your spare room. Thank you for the mention of my blog too! Now to the quilt. I love it too. What a nice gift for your husband. I do know about the Amish having one thing be wrong on their quilts; for humbling themselves as to not being perfect (as God is). I did not notice anything wrong with your quilt. It is wonderful and I love the stencils that you made yourself and used on the quilt. It is fun having friends blogging / sharing together. We motivate each other and share ideas. I know I enjoyed seeing your work today.

    1. Thanks for your suggestion on the crochet edge for the scarf. Unfortunately, I am not a crocheter. I will have to see if my girlfriend Teresa can help me. I do like reading other peoples blog, sharing in their creativity and yes, it does motivate me. I even, and this is a miracle, got my sister to start an embroidery project. I'll keep you posted on her progress.

  4. Squares do make the best quilts. Great colors, too. I love your dresser scarf...so nicely done! I grew up sleeping on embroidered pillowcases much like this pattern.
