Table Runner and Wool Rug

FUNNY THING HAPPENED WHEN 

VISITING THE NEIGHBORS!

We popped by the neighbors house a few weeks ago when we were taking an evening stroll.  They have a beautiful log cabin, which they furnished in a wonderful western theme.  They have 2 horses and an mule in the pasture and a hitching post in their front yard with a saddle on it.  Looks really cool.  Anyway...as I was looking around I noticed that a number of their fabrics:  curtains, lamp shade...that I have in my stash of fabrics.  

I also had a vintage quilt block left over from a quilt (that I never finished.  That's a story for another time, yikes).  It got me to thinking and TADA I made them a table runner.  (It's also pay back for all the wonderful horse poop I get from them!)  

The flower garden block was surrounded by white and was poorly made.  I took all the white off and blanket stitched it to a matching red square of fabric. 

 

 It was fun to make and I hope they enjoy it because I sure do enjoy the horse poop!

WOOL RUG

 

I used the same frame that I've been making the rag rugs with but instead used wool stripes instead of cotton.  I went to 2 fabric stores to buy wool and neither one of them sell wool or wool blend.  So it was off to the thrift store for 100% wool jackets and skirts, navy, light brown, gray and light blue.  The navy in the picture looks black.

I worked this one slow as I wanted to make sure that the weavers were folded as I was weaving them.  I used hemp string as the vertical weavers.  I had wool lint all over but it was fun to do.  

 

 This one goes to my son.  I may start on another braided rug.  Hummm

The garden is going great, our best looking one so far since we've lived here, which is 4 years this month.  Not a weed in sight and already we've been eating lettuce, radishes and strawberries, with cabbage and peas almost ready.  Can't wait!

Table Runners

TABLE RUNNERS FOR GIFTS

I don't give a lot of gifts out at Christmas, but this year I got busy and make 3 table runners for my family. 

ZIG ZAG TO HAWAII

I had a few triangles left over from a past project and so decided to add a pretty cream fabric.  Sometimes I start a project and not sure what I'm going to do with it.  I wait til it "speaks" to me.  And yes it did!  This lovely runner would be perfect for my brother and his wife who live in Hawaii.

The cranberry color has a slight gradient to it.  My brother sent me a picture of the runner on his kitchen counter and it looked great.

FLOWER GARDEN

My sister-in-law sent me a box of many projects that she and her grandmother had started.  (See the patchwork quilt on 11/16/15.)  In the box were these set of hexagon blocks and fabric to make many more.  Wellll, I started a flower garden quilt and STILL have not completed it and I was NOT going to do another one.  So I thought I would make this table runner and send them back to her.  

She paper pieced the hexagons together and did a wonder job of it.  I just appliqued them on to this cool white fabric and used some of the extra fabric that was in the box for a border.

The runner now has a place on top of their freezer and fits perfect.

SPLIT RAIL

I had these colors lay out to make myself a spiral table runner.  Never got around to it and glanced over to see the fabrics laying there and thought of my step son and his girlfriend.  These colors would look fabulous in their house.  

I choose this simple pattern, thinking it would highlight each of the fabric.  I love green and browns together.  My husband was by their house a few days ago and he said that it was on their coffee table.

I have slowed down on my sewing these past few months.  I've been busy working on my family genealogy.  My grandmother told me years ago about her parents and grandparents, with birth/death dates, jobs, hobbies...   It's been lots of fun and I've been able to trace back several generations on many sides of the family.  From the Revolutionary War, Civil War, WWI and WWII, along with Korea and Vietnam veterans.   I have located census records, marriage certificates and draft registrations.  I'm complying a book and adding photo's when I can.  Interesting, very interesting.

Quilt and Table Runner

FUNDRAISER TABLE RUNNER

I made this lovely purple table runner to help raise money for the Activity Department at work.  They are having a silent auction and carnival.   I had these strips of purple from my sister-in-law Mel box of goodies she sent me and thought they would work well in this runner.   I bought a basket and filled it with fun kitchen stuff along with the table runner.  Hope she gets a good bid.

QUILT

My mother-in-law gave me some books of furniture fabric samples and I used them to create this quilt of mixed print of earth tones, peaches and greens.

 

 I loved the prints and had lots of fun with this.  I bought the green print fabric to offset the nine patch blocks and made it a twin size.

 

 I hand quilted it with green thread.

Table Runners and Vintage Block Picture

TABLE RUNNERS

This is my modified version of a Spicy Spiral Runner using some lovely burgundy and brown fabrics.  I had about 5 or more yards of the brown gardening fabric that I really don't like.   It came in a box of fabric that was given to me.

I've been using it for scrap projects, to tie tomatoes up, etc.  This was my very first runner I made last year and used this fabric just in case it didn't work out.  But I really like it!  The colors go well together and has a nice fall feel to it.

I had a small bit of batik fabric and added some matching yellows, greens and blues.  I sewed strips together, but just didn't like it, so I cut them diagonally and sewed them back together.  I also used batting to make it puffy when machine quilted.

VINTAGE BLOCK

At my local thrift store was this small bag of vintage fabric and couldn't resist!  Inside was a quilt block and bits of fabric in all sizes.

 I love the colors and design of the block.  The quilter machine sewn the pieces together. 

You can see how its coming apart and has stains.  Adorable fabrics!

Can you see the blue blocks that were pieced together to make 2 whole blocks.  The blue block on the left has a long seam.  It looks like a wrinkle.

I  didn't want to make more blocks and thought it would make a great picture that would honor the quilter that made it.  So off to Hobby Lobby to purchase a frame and put it up.

Here it is in my spare bedroom, along with my embroidery dresser scarf (with the edge not done yet, yikes!) and two other quilts that I make.

Quilt Blocks, Table Runner and Strawberries

OLD MAIDS PUZZLE

 I really like the name of these quilt blocks.  It does seem like some kind of puzzle as you look at them and figure out what direction they are going in.

 

The quilt blocks came from my friend Teresa, who picked them up at an auction and gave them to me.  I thought they were lovely and couldn't wait to set them.  Black and red are not the usual colors I work with, but I gave it a go. 

 The white fabric is old flower sack material.  You can see a few stains on the blocks and all were hand sewn.  Most of the blocks were not exactly square, so I did my best to center them. 

 

  

  The only problem was that one set of blocks was made from this brownish print!  What!  How did this fabric make it into the mix?  It's not red or black, it's not polka dot or checked, and it's not what I would call floral!  How about "unusual"!

 It just didn't go, so off to the fabric store I went and found this great black and red floral print.  I also pick up this lovely red fabric for the other blocks and backing.

 

 The quilt is queen size and I knew at the time I would not be able to quilt it by hand so I sent it off to be machine quilted.  Now I've been able to enjoy it for several years on my bed!

(this is not one of the quilts on my project list.  Holy Moly, I'm still working on those!)

 TABLE RUNNER

I'm attending a wedding of my nephew this weekend and made this simple table runner for the new couple. 

 I choose cream and tan colors to make it neutral for any color scheme they have in their home.  This was make with just left over fabric in my stash.

I framed the strips with a little darker color to make them stand out more.  I hope they like it.

 GARDEN

I'm keeping my garden simple this year.  The early cool temperature and rain limited what I planted and the weather continues to dictate what I will harvest.  Everything is so waterlogged but I have a great BUMPER crop of strawberries.  

 

 I've made jam, ice cream, desserts, fruit salad, shortcake and syrup.  I froze a lot and dried some and ate a lot.  And still so many are rotting in the patch.  Our neighbor is coming tomorrow to pick what they want.  They are good and tasty!!!

Duckling Quilt, Fan Quilt and Spicy Spiral Table Runner

1930's VINTAGE QUILT PATTERN

Here it is, my Duckling quilt.  The colors pop, although the picture doesn't reflect that, and I really enjoyed working on it.  It was machine sewed together, then I hand quilted it.  I drew wavy lines free hand on the border and sash to make it look like the ducks were flying in the sky.

I found a nice yellow spotted fabric for the back and use the same print from the blocks for the binding.

 Just a reminder....

The Kansas City Star published free quilt patterns from designers and readers from 1928 to 1961 in the hopes of increasing female readership.  This one is an Eveline Foland design called Ducklings.

Not bad!  I'm working right along.  The quilt in the frame that I'm hand quilting  I call  "Cappuccino", the colors are warm and gorgeous.  I'll continue working on the needlepoint pillow, (which is slow work) and maybe put a dent in the wool rug project.

FAN QUILT

This quilt came to me completely done, along with a bunch of fabric.  I used a light pink for the back and hand tied it.   I like the bit of lace that was used.


I have some of these fabrics in my stash!  I gave this quilt to my sister as an extra blanket when all her grandchildren come over.

SPICY SPIRAL TABLE RUNNER

This table runner I made for my sister from fabric I had in my stash pile.  She wanted blues and yellows.  I only has a small amount of the blue check, so I pieced some together.
